Downes Hope For Longer Rovers Stay

On loan defender Aaron Downes is hoping to extend his stay with Rovers.

Downes loan runs out soon, but both Downes and Mcghee would like the 26 year old to extend his stay. ‘It’s something we are going to sort out this week,’ Downes said to TIB. ‘At Chesterfield I was in the side for two or three games but then out again for the next two or three. It was very frustrating for me, but since I’ve come here I’ve played every game and I’m really enjoying it.

‘It’s a great club, everyone has been very supportive and they are a great set of lads.

‘If I can prolong my stay here then it’s definitely something I’d like to do – whether that would be for another month, until the end of the season or permanently I’m not sure yet. We’ve not spoken about that.

‘But staying here is definitely something I want to do.’

Rovers have only conceded one goal in the last three games since Downes arrival from Chesterfield and the Australian central defender has impressed with his displays and his organisation of the defence. After Rovers win at Cheltenham McGhee singled out Downes for his display ‘He was an example to the rest of them, and they all fed off that. When you see your centre-halves winning things and being aggressive and competitive, it gives everyone such a lift.

‘I have already spoken to Chris Turner at Chesterfield about extending Aaron’s spell here, and that’s something that will be happening.

Downes was signed by former boss Paul Buckle who is now being linked the the vacant managers job at Stevenage.
