What is going on with this great side of ours.? Questions must be asked. Home form this season has been woeful. The record stands at played 10 – won 2, drawn 1 and lost 7. If it was not for an awesome away record Darrell Clarke would be looking for a new club.

Chesham United deserved their win, and their day in the sun. Their goal was the only bit of quality in the match. The match stats showed that we had far more shots than they did and the corner count was off the scale. But like so many times this season we lacked quality in the final third. We do not have an out and out winger to put the telling cross in or the mercurial striker to put the chances away.

I actually felt sorry for Lee Nicholls. Hero in the first half with an impressive penalty save but sadly at fault for the Chesham goal. Lee is a fair keeper at this level, but I cannot see that he is a marked improvement on Steve Mildenhall who we were all hoping to see between the sticks on Sunday.

Darrell Clarke put out a strong side and the pre-match message seemed to be that we wanted to embrace a cup run, but to my mind he changes the team far too often for no apparent reason. Daniel Leadbitter was not in the team at Cambridge. James Clarke was, and we scored an impressive away win. Why change a winning team, unless it is down to injury?

Over the last few months it has become apparent that Ellis Harrison and Matty Taylor do not work well together. Many feel that Ellis is best used as an impact player brought on when the other side are tiring and he can frighten them with his pace. He does not seem to be an orthodox centre forward. Matty Taylor, Billy Bodin and James Gosling all had days to forget and the impressive Leadbitter limped off with an ankle injury. Pre-Match comments suggested that Jamie Lucas might get his chance, and surely the Cup would have been an ideal opportunity for him to earn his spurs.

My main gripe though is that Chris Lines cannot get a game. His arrival got us promoted and he inspired both of our wins at the Mem this season. Hos defence splitting pass to Matty Taylor in the Wycombe game was a match winner. His short corner routine versus Barnet set the tone for that game.

Form is temporary and class is permanent. Put Linesy in and we have a fighting chance. Yes he sometimes goes missing, but the introduction of him and Jermaine Easter on Sunday sparked a mini revival and with luck we might have got a draw.

I sincerely hope that we win at Southend in the JPT, but DC after the game seemed like he needed to motivate himself before the players! We then have a difficult home game versus Carlisle on Saturday.

Like many teams before them Chesham came with the idea of thwarting our attacking intentions. Perhaps this does cause some anxiety in the crowd which is passed onto the players. But hey they are supposed to be professional, and they have a career that many envy.

Previous comments have suggested that we have spent a lot of money in getting promotion and subsequently, perhaps on wages rather than big money signings. It is about time DC got the best out of the players at the Mem. If money is tight, why waste it on loan keepers when we have Mildy on the bench? If money is no object then get new strikers or midfielders in. If we cannot afford new players then shuffle the pack so that Lines, Olly Clarke, Jamie Lucas and Nathan Blisett get a start.
Fans worry that DC will tinker with our team at home to try and prevent the other side from scoring. With our woeful home record we have nothing to lose. Go for broke. Attack like the Rovers of old and let other sides worry about coming to the Mem. After the last 2 games we can only improve!
