Gas Make The Play Offs

Rickie Lambert scored his 8th goal of the season to seal Rovers a place in the play offs.

Rovers went into the game knowing they had to match Stockport Countys result against Darlington to clinch a play off spot. As Rovers went 1-0 down to a Joel Porter strike, Stockport were taking the lead against the 10 men of Darlington.

Things were looking bad for Rovers especially as Stockport were running riot against Darlington, but a couple of inspired substitutions by Manager Paul Trollope at half time turned the game around.

Trollope brought on young Sean Rigg and the older head of Sammy Igoe. Rovers had offered little in the first half apart from a long-range Lambert shot that went high, and a low cross from Craig Disley that was cleared in front of goal by Humphreys.

But it took Rovers only nine minutes of the second half to get back on level terms after they changed their system, Richard Walker scoring from the spot after Boland fouled the impressive Disley in a packed penalty area.

Rovers kept pushing for the win as they knew a draw was not enough to secure a play off spot. Former Rovers player Ali Gibb cleared an effort off the line while another effort from Lambert was well saved by keeper Konstantopoulos.

But the keeper had no chance five minutes from time when Lambert was at the far post to head in Ryan Green’s right-wing cross for the vital winner.
