Another fantastic read from Simon ‘Sprout` Phillips

Welcome to the final Something for the weekend before the final something of the weekend of the season; possibly. As we have got to the last few weeks it has been harder to write something as what as ultimately been a disappointing season, peters out. Thankfully the appointment of Mark McGhee has prevented the season from possibly being far worse and nail biting right now and the way the new manager has carried himself since taking charges has certainly rebuilt the confidence of many Gasheads and hopefully we can carry this forward for the 2012/13 season. That said after the 7-1 thrashing of Burton, we followed up with another disappointing away result, this time losing to Port Vale and once Tom Parkes was sent off (I assume ending his season) was always going to be a hard ask to come back and get something from the game. Mark McGhee once again picked a strong team as he has said he will continue to do so, but as I have said previously I do find it slightly disappointing not to see a couple of youngsters involved, especially when you hear them talked up.

There was some sad news this week as a real Rovers legend passed away. Now I am certainly not of an age to have seen Alfie Biggs play, but have certainly heard and read of some of his exploits and will no doubt be remembered for his part in Rovers beating Manchester United`s “Busby Babes” in 1956. There is not much more I can say about the Baron of Eastville, but I hope he gets a fitting tribute and send off from The Gas on Saturday.

Now to the early morning Friday edit, to help fill this weeks edition out and I have just seen the images of the new home and away kits for next season. On first impressions I am undecided on the new home shirt, and although I don`t mind blue shorts and socks I would rather see what shorts with any home kit. The home shirt seems to have a bit of a retro feel to it with the V neck collar. I think that it might be a grower, but I think I will stick with my own retro 1990/1991 home shirt that I purchased a couple of seasons ago. As for the away kit, well I just hate the unoriginal and generic nature of them. It looks smart enough, but it could be anyone and it seems nearly every team that comes to the Mem has a slight variation of the same no matter who the manufacturer is. At least the Black Arab shirt has something that identifies it from X,Y,Z football club. The home kit is always going to be some form of blue & white quarters (which mind you I feel can use some more creativity at times to make it a bit different) but the away is a chance to be different. There are many colours in this world and if we keep a quarter design for away we could use Amber/Gold, Yellow/Green, Orange/Black, Silver/Black etc. I quite liked this years Green and black and it just seems boring and unadventurous to bring something like an all black kit when we have our own style we can use.

Anyway that`s enough on trivial matters like kits that I am sure some of you don`t care about and this Saturday sees us host our final home game of the season against visitors Accrington Stanley. I am sure Mark McGhee and the boys will want to finish the home season of with a win and a good performance in front of hopefully a decent crowd. Prices have been cut for the last game to encourage people along to what is a ‘dead rubber` as it were and hopefully the weather will pick up as I am sure given the rain we have had it may well put some off making the journey. Although there isn`t much to celebrate I feel the players deserve some recognition of their efforts in what has been a poor season. They may not be the best players we`ve had here and some of them may not be good enough for the managers plans next season, but I don`t think you can generally fault their effort regardless of how good or bad anyone thinks some players may be.

On a related note if you haven`t done so yet, there is still time to get your votes in for The Supporters Club Player and Young Player of the year, with the event this year being held on Thursday 3rd May 7.30pm in the Supporters Club bar. My choices are Danny Woodards and Elliot Richards respectively. Danny was an excellent signing by Paul Buckle and has been consistently good all season and is probably the best right back I have seen here and I would say would fit into any team in this division and many of the ones above easily. Elliot has managed to notch a few goals this season where he has been in and out of the side and also played out wide and is showing that he could be a real useful player for us next season.

That`s it from me this week, I hope you all have a good weekend whatever you are up to and the weather doesn`t spoil any plans. UTG!
