New Bristol Rovers manager John Ward says helping Rovers avoid the drop is his toughest job yet.

Ward has took over at Rovers with the club bottom of League with the club facing going out of the Football League for the first time in their history and Ward knows its going to be tough to stop it happening, but he was encouraged by what he saw in the 2-2 draw away at Aldershot.

‘It was the first time I’d seen my team play and the approach and attitude they showed gave me a lot of encouragement. We twice came back from a goal down to get a point, and that showed there’s some real character in the squad.

‘I’ve told the players that it’s now their responsibility to maintain that level of commitment and, if they do that, then we’ll have every chance of avoiding what would be an absolutely devastating blow if we were to go down.

‘To prevent that happening one thing we must do is defend better. Our goal difference is the worst in the division and so improving that could be key, but to be fair to the lads they defended pretty well at Aldershot and we’ll aim to go on improving.

‘I’m not kidding myself that relegation can’t happen, and as I said when I came back to the club this is the toughest job I’ve faced in over 20 years as a manager. But I’ll be giving it all the hard work and commitment that I expect from my players.’

Rovers are three points behind Aldershot who sit outside the relegation zone.
