Richard Walker has lifted the lid on his final year with the Pirates.

Walker has admitted that this last year had turned into a ‘nightmare’ after he was on the bench and then subsequently dropped altogether.

Richard Joined Shrewsbury Town yesterday on a year long loan and is expected to spend the remainder of his contract at the New Meadow, in hope that this will spark a more permanent deal.

Walker said: (BEP)

‘It wasn’t a tough decision to go to Shrewsbury. I’d been at Bristol Rovers and the last season turned out to be a bit of a nightmare,’ said Walker.

‘After helping the club to promotion the season before, I found myself not playing and towards the end of the season not even being on the bench.

‘I knew Shrewsbury had been interested in me for a while and spoke to them in the middle of last season, but it wasn’t the right time for me then as I felt I hadn’t given League One a big enough crack.

‘I knew it was time to move on now. There were a number of clubs interested in taking me on loan, but it’s Shrewsbury I wanted to come to.’

Walker has also said that his choice was ultimately between Shrewsbury Town and Notts County. New Manager and ex team mate of Walker, Paul Simpson is very pleased with his new signing.

Cant blame him really, as he didn’t really get much of a look in, i would of preffered Williams to go 🙁 Good luck walks

No, i don’t blame him. He did well for us and will always be a legend in my eyes. I think once Paul Trollope said he wouldn’t be in the quarters again, it was definitely time to go. It’s nice that we won’t be paying his wages, as i think he was close on £2000 a week, for a player that doesn’t play thats a huge waste of cash. I still think we should of sold him though.

pity we didnt get cash for him but we cant keep a player like walks in the reserves for a year.

I expected Walker and Lambert to continue their great partnership of the League Two promotion season. For some reason it didn’t work out for Walker. I am sure he will do well playing alongside Holt at Shrewsbury.

Dont blame him for speaking out, it was a contractual shambles, he deserved to be offered a new contract, but it was a bad idea to give him a three year deal. I will look forward to find out what will happen with his contract. Whether we are contributing to his wages, whether a deal can be struck for a transfer fee towards the end of his contract. Or whether this was a free transfer so to speak
