Bristol Rovers progressed through to the Second round of The EFL Cup after beating Championship side Cardiff City and set up a away tie against Premiership side Chelsea.

Darrell Clarke made just one change to the side that lost to Scunthorpe on the weekend with Ellis Harrison coming in to replace Rory Gafney.

It as a game of few chances but Rovers did have the best ones, Lines had a shot easily saved and Stuart Sinclair was unlucky to put Rovers in front when he steered Matty Taylors knock down goal wards only to see his effort cleared off the line.

Neither team had a real effort on goal in the second half and although Cardiff saw more of the ball they failed to break down the Rovers defence. So the game went into Extra Time and Rovers fans had to wait until the 115 minute for the winner, but it was worth the wait. Chris Lines picked up a blocked effort at goal and then unleashed a 35 yard drive into the top corner to make it 1-0.

Cardiff sub Frederic Gounongbe almost earned a penalty shoot-out, but his close-range effort hit the post.

Rovers now play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday 23 August.
