Bristol Rovers manager Darrell Clarke has made his second signing of the summer, bringing in Bournemouth midfielder Sam Matthews on a free transfer.

Matthews has been with Bournemouth since the age of 10 and although he has been included in the first team squad and played friendlies with the first team he didn’t make a senior league appearance for Bournemouth. The 21-year-old spent last season on loan with Conference Premier side Eastleigh where he played 39 times and scored six times including a hat-trick in the final game of the season away at Solihull Motors. He was voted player of the year and players player of the year last season.

Matthews will fit into Darrell Clarkes flexible style as he can operate in the centre of midfield, on the left and on the right although his favoured position is in the centre. He will officially join Rovers on July the 1st.

Matthews joins fellow midfielder Ed Upson who was Clarkes first summer signing last week. Early business from Rovers, something Gasheads won’t be used to.
